I have been invited to speak and chair a panel at Interop, New York (November 16-20, 2009) to give a talk exploring the hype and reality surrounding Data Center based containers and Green IT in general.
The goal of the panel discussion will help data center managers evaluate and approach containers by understanding their economics, key considerations and real-life customer examples. It’s going to be a great conversation. If you are attending Interop this year I would love to see you there!

Hi Mike,
There are indeed many in the industry whom have “creatively” retrofited standard 20′ or 40′ containers into so-called data centers. This is not a new concept (i.e. we have seen Sungard using trucks and containers as mobile DR structures to support business continuity since a long time back).
I’ve noted some key drivers in the demand for such containerized data centers on my blog (link: http://bearingsasia.com/blogs/2009/09/the-things-we-put-in-containers/#more-211).
Unfortunately, I’m in Singapore and won’t be able to attend the Interop event in NY. However, I’d be more than happy to discuss with you some of the market demands (especially government and military needs) for containerized data centers.
Rgds,
Wai-Kit
